ABSTRACT
Ferrocement slabs are a type of composite material made of cement and steel wire mesh, used in construction for various structural applications such as retaining walls, ships, and irrigation gates. They have high strength, cracking resistance, ductility, and are lightweight and energy efficient. The current study considered the performance of ferrocement slabs reinforced with different types of wire mesh and two layers of welded steel bars mesh on each side of the lightweight slab.
The study used finite element modeling (FEM) with ABAQUS software and tested four slabs. The parameters that were studied were the type and number of layers of expanded steel mesh or welded steel mesh, with two layers of welded steel bars mesh on each side of the slab. The results showed that both expanded metal mesh and welded steel mesh are effective in reinforcing the ferrocement slabs when compared to using just square mesh made of high tensile deformed steel bars, and the load and displacement increased with an increase in the volume of steel. The study also investigated stress distribution and crack patterns.
