Abstract
Value Engineering (VE) is a creative systematized approach whose objective is to seek the best balance among the cost, reliability, and performance of a project. Constructability review is the use of construction knowledge and experience during the planning, design, procurement and construction phases of the project to achieve the project’s cost, schedule, quality and safety objectives. Both VE studies and constructability reviews are important links in the design/construct/maintain continuum. While they have been used in the construction industry for many years, several industry practitioners have expressed concerns with their ease of implementation during the various phases of the project. Recent technology advances can address such concerns and can increase the accuracy and effectiveness of both VE and constructability reviews. Several recent research projects conducted at the University of Cincinnati have evaluated the use of advanced technologies such as Machine Learning (ML) and Building Information modeling (BIM) to improve the VE and constructability review processes for buildings’ structural systems. Results indicate that the VE and constructability review processes can significantly benefit from advanced technologies and that the key to success is the proper timing of using such technologies.
