Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of strain hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) systems for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) rectangular haunched beams which are critical in shear. The experimental program involved ten specimens (one prismatic
and nine haunched). Six specimens were kept un-strengthened to be used as a reference and to study the effect of changing the haunch angle and the other four specimens were strengthened in critical shear span using precast SHCC plates. These specimens tested under four-point bending for assessing the angle inclination of haunched beam, the effect of shear reinforcement on the behaviour of RC haunched beams, the effect of precast SHCC plates, and the effect of SHCC plate configuration on the load and deformational capacities of the strengthened specimens. Experimental results revealed that existing of shear reinforcement exerts a major significant contribution to shear strength capacity. The results also ensured the effectiveness application of the SHCC in enhancing the load capacities (Pmax) of haunched beams. The average enhancement of the load carrying capacity achieved by SHCC strengthening with respect to the un-strengthened specimen is approximately 130%. Furthermore, using reinforced plates by wire mesh steel had a significantly effect on both cracking evolution and energy absorption of the strengthened haunched beams.
