Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the behavior of built-up cold formed steel columns (BCFSC) with different spacing between connectors. The paper presents two creative BCFSC with varying cross-sectional geometries. Each section is composed of two vertical elements (Sigma sections) back-to-back separated by a distance. connected with two horizontal elements channels and/or plates joining between the vertical elements. Bolts are used to assemble the element of each sections’ components together. The channel and also the sigma thicknesses are chosen 4 mm while the thickness of the plates is chosen 6 mm. The finite element (FE) software ABAQUS is used to study and investigate different parameters that affect the axial behavior of the two creative BCFSC sections’ profiles numerically. Various parameters affecting the BCFSC behavior are studied using the proposed FE model. These parameters are: spacing between connectors, back-to-back distance between longitudinal sigma sections, section profile and effective cross-sectional area.
