Abstract
Reinforced concrete box girders are important elements in concrete bridge structures. Few studies have been paid attention for strengthening of RC box girders in shear. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of strengthening RC box girder by using ETS technique. It consists of opening holes across the depth of the beam’s cross-section, and bars of steel or FRP material are introduced into these holes and bonded to the concrete with adhesive materials. To assess the effectiveness of this technique, 8 RC box girders were the subject of an extensive experimental study. To investigate the effect of Spacing between Stirrups and the effect of different types of embedded bars; the load carrying capacity, deflection, ductility, crack behavior, stresses, and modes of failure for the strengthened beams were examined. The results gave effective resistance to shear stresses. When the spacing between ETS bar decreased, the reinforced girders' load bearing capacity increased. The ETS FRP strengthening method has proven to be an effective way to increase the shear capacity of RC box girders.
