Abstract
Performance of construction projects is not self-regulating. Hence, a continuous on-site progress monitoring and control process is distinctly demanded to avert possible deviations or misalignments. Several research efforts were provided to improve the efficiency and quality of the progress monitoring and control process with the help of information and communication technologies (e.g., multimedia tools, email services, voice-based tools, and handheld devices). Although these technologies support traditional tasks, facilitate communications, and speed up information processing, their utilization is confined to a centralized framework. Such a framework reduces information security and decreases synchronization and coordination between key stakeholders. This research introduces a novel peer-to-peer framework that relies on Blockchain Technology (BT), Inter-Planetary File System (IPFS), and Chatbots for exchanging and managing on-site information and related as-built digital assets. The framework includes a three-module system that is developed through a three-path operation, including i) developing a permissioned blockchain network for exchanging textual data, ii) developing a private IPFS network for exchanging on-site visuals and digital assets, and iii) developing a chatbot for data communication. A prototype of the framework is built and validated in terms of practicality and generalization for exchanging on-site information and as-built digital assets. Further, the prototype performance is technically evaluated in terms of transfer latency and storage size.
