Abstract
The roadway bridges in the Egyptian transportation network infrastructure are the most important component of the traffic flow. Bridges are designed to serve efficiently for a long life span. Replacing an old bridge is expensive, time-consuming and may be had a bad effect on surrounding environment. Many of the old existing bridges are exceeded their originally designed traffic load and as a result the bridges are in need to either strengthening work or to be replaced. Strengthening bridges often requires closing or redirecting the traffic which causes disturbance in the traffic system and this is a very difficult option for the main roads in Egypt. The current revolution in the Egyptian road network necessitates the development of a vision to maintain these huge investments to perform its role efficiently during its service life and to help the decision makers of road networks to manage challenging situations for the present traffic system, and to make all the possible adjustments required in order to reach a sustainable development of the Egyptian society. The structural condition assessment of highway bridges is an integrated bridge management system that could be powerful tool for decision makers to overcome the transportation network problems raised by bridges. This paper introduces an evaluation of the condition assessment approach of in-service reinforced concrete bridges through a complete application of the condition assessment approach on El Rashah Bridge. The results showed the effectiveness of the introduced approach to assist the decision makers to maximize the bridge safety, serviceability, and functionality within reasonable budget.
