Abstract
The construction of a new barrage along the Nile River necessitate the estimation of coefficient of permeability in the site for the purpose of design and analysis of dewatering system during the construction of the barrage. The aquifer in the site is pervious and heterogeneous in nature. The aquifer layer consists of sandy gravel/sand and gravel, extend to deeper depths. Occasionally at some depths, the deposit is interbedded by thin laminae of silt and clay. Estimating the coefficient of permeability in such deposit is very challenging. This paper describes the attempt to characterize and estimate the coefficient of permeability of the aquifer. Several approaches are followed; the use of empirical formulas that rely on grain size characteristics of the aquifer, measurement of coefficient of permeability within investigation borehole at several depths, carrying out pumping test in the site and finally use of 3D finite difference visual Modflow to mode the aquifer and simulate the pumping test. Finally, a surprising conclusion is made regarding the estimation of coefficient of Permeability in such deposit.
